Lens Materials

Plastic - This is a material which is significantly lighter than glass as well as being inherently impact resistant. Plastic lenses are used by many large chains and often are not the best lens for clear, crisp vision.

Polycarbonate - This is a lightweight lens which is the most impact resistant of the materials today. It was originally used for safety lenses, but has been improved and is now also used for dress eyewear. These lenses are incredibly strong and lightweight, but also can cause some distortion.

Trivex - This is the material of choice at Rinkov Eyecare Center – it essentially does it all. Trivex is the lightest weight lens available, the it is strongest lens available and provides superior optical quality.

Hi Index - If you want the thinnest lens available, a high-index lens is probably right for you. These are the thinnest lenses available. Lenses are graded by comparing the speed of light passing through a lens to the speed of light passing through the air. The higher the index the thinner the lens and the slower the light passes through. Lenses are available in 1.54, 1.60, 1.66, 1.67, and 1.71 indexes.

Anti-Reflective Treatment - This coating is designed to reduce reflected glare to the eye from viewed surfaces, enhancing cosmetic and visual off of the lenses. With anti-reflective coating, this can be reduced to only .5% loss. This greatly aids night driving and computer use by reducing the reflected glare off of the lenses.

Transitions® Lenses - These lenses change color form clear indoors to a darker gray or brown outdoors. Transitions Lenses are available in three varieties:
Transitions VI - A traditional Transitions lens, only better! These lenses change from light to dark and dark to light faster than previous Transitions.
Transitions Xtra Active - This lens is a little darker indoors and gets very dark outdoors. These lenses are designed for a Transitions lens wearer that spends more time outdoors
Transitions Vantage - Transitions’ newest and most advance product yet. This lens starts clear and turns into a polarized lens when exposed to the sun. The result is crisp and clear vision, thanks to the polarizing effect of the lens.

Rinkov Eyecare Center was one of 12 practices selected by Transitions to preview the Vantage lens and offer them to our patients before any other office in the country. If you are a fan of Transitions lenses, you will love the new Vantage Lens!
